Specialty Contact Lenses

If you have ever been told that you cannot be fit with traditional contact lenses, we're happy to let you know that we specialize in hard-to-fit contact lenses at Woodley Optometry. These are designed for patients with high astigmatism, keratoconus, post radial keratotomy (RK surgery), post-LASIK, and others.

Contact lenses are quite popular as they are unnoticeable, easy to use, and correct your vision better than glasses. There are several types of contact lenses which provide different levels of comfort, correction, and visual clarity. Some of those types are better in cases of certain eye conditions. Let's take a closer look at them.

What types of contact lenses are there?

In terms of material, there are soft and rigid contact lenses.

Soft contact lenses are the most popular type. They are comfortable since they adapt to the shape of your cornea (the surface of the front of your eye).

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses are hard, as the name suggests, which is better in case of certain conditions. They are also more durable and let in more oxygen than soft lenses.

In terms of shape, there are spherical, toric, and scleral lenses.

Spherical lenses are shaped like the side of a voleyball. They are prescribed for the most common eye conditions (nearsightedness and farsightedness).

Toric lenses are shaped differently than regular spherical lenses, the shape usually being described as that of the side of a doughnut. These are used in patients with astigmatism and can be both soft or rigid.

Scleral lenses are dome-shaped and bigger that usual. They are used in patients with keratoconus or who have undegone RK or LASIK surgery.
