Is blue light bad for your eyes?

Blue light is EVERYWHERE! From laptops to tablets to smartphones, we are constantly exposed to wavelengths that can have harmful effects throughout most of the day. Not all blue light is harmful, though. Blue wavelengths can be beneficial and responsible for boosting attention and mood throughout the day. However, this comes at a price.

Blue light can in eyestrain, fatigue and dry eye. These symptoms altogether describe Computer Vision Syndrome, a condition very common in young adults as well as people spending multiple hours a day in front of computer screens. Besides that, it has also been studied to contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration.

In addition to damaging ocular structures, blue light disrupts circadian rhythms. Studies suggest that circadian rhythms that are disrupted or “off” can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

At Woodley Optometry, we treat the visual symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome including dry eye, fatigue and eyestrain. We tailor treatment plans specific to each patient and their own personal visual needs and demands. We start off by evaluating time spent on various devices, posture and eye alignment to prescribe blue light blocking lens enhancements (blue light glasses) and other tools to best fit your lifestyle and visual demands.
